Susan Kay-Williams presents
Imperial Purple to Marie Antoinette’s Fleas: The colourful history of textiles
This lecture explores the fascinating story of how dyes were discovered, made, and used from the earliest time to the end of the 18th century. It shows the social importance of certain colours with a story that travels from Europe to India and the Americas and explores invention, war, the church, money, power and sex.
Dr Susan Kay-Williams, CEO of the Royal School of Needlework 2007-2024 is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and of The Society of Dyers & Colourists, a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Needlemakers, an author and lectuer.
Zara Fleming presents
Journey across the Himalayas
This lecture will take us through the highest mountain range in the world, the Himalayas. The countries on this journey lie on the ancient trade routes connecting India with Central Asia and although isolated they became important centres of Buddhist art and culture.
Zara Fleming is a lecturer, art consultant and exhibition curator specialising in the art and culture of Tibet, the Himalayan areas and Mongolia.
Tessa Boase presents
London’s Lost Department Stores
London’s sumptuous Victorian and Edwardian department stores changed the capital – and changed its women. Shoppers of every rank were lavishly wooed, seduced and often undone by the temptations laid out before them in these new ‘cathedrals of desire’. This is a cultural journey through a slice of social history.
Tessa Boase is a freelance journalist, author, lecturer and campaigner with an interest in uncovering the stories of invisible women from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff presents
Mondrian’s Evolution into Abstraction
Mondrian is the artist who created the extremely recognisable elementary colour field paintings. What many do not realise is that by then he had already 30 years of being a figurative artist. This lecture follows this evolution, his self discovery and his belief in a new world order.
Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff read social psychology at the University of Amsterdam then turned to her true love – the Arts. With a Master’s in art history, she now runs art courses, tours and events from London, New York and Amsterdam.
Graham Jones presents
The Art of State Ceremonial Music
The UK provides some of the biggest ceremonial events in the world but why is that? How do the military prepare for major events such as the State Opening of Parliament, State Visits, National Day of Remembrance, Royal Weddings or even a State Funeral?
Dr Graham Jones started as a musician in the British Army and after nearly forty years he retired as the Senior Director of Music, Household Division and Director of Music, Coldstream Guards.
